Grouper Fishing

Posted on

The Grouper fishing out of Clearwater has been great lately. Our Fulld Day fishing charters have been getting limits of above average Gag Grouper with some keeper Reds mixed in as well. The end of Summer is a great time to head out deep sea fishing in Clearwater. Great fishing and typically calm seas!

May 2015 Clearwater FL Fishing Report

As the weather gets hotter, the best fishing tends to be farther offshore. Keeper Red Grouper have been easiest to catch the farther out we go, also the Amberjack bite has been extremely good on the deeper offshore wrecks. I expect this pattern to stay though the end of the month. June 1st Red Snapper season opens so we’ll shift our attention to them for awhile. Nearshore the Tarpon have shown up off the Clearwater Beaches and getting hook ups means getting up early!

NOAA Fisheries announced the 2015 Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper Season will be from June 1st – July 15th. This is for Federal For-Hire Vessels (with a valid permit). FishEye Sportfishing carries such a permit so book your trip now as dates fill up quick!!

We run our Red Snapper Charter as an extended day, but put emphasis on getting our group a limit of big Snapper before targeting Grouper, Amberjack, tuna, etc…. Here is some FWC  info on our Red Snapper fishery.

Spring Fishing Report

Clearwater, Florida

Near shore:The Kings are here and should stick around for at least another month or so. With water temps in the low 70’s and tons of bait schools around, other predator fish, like Cobia, Spanish Mackerel and Sharks will be mixed in also.

Deep Sea Fishing: The Grouper and Snapper bite has been good on the 3/4 and full day charters, Amberjack are also fired up right now on all of the deep water wrecks.

This good to excellent fishing should continue as the weather has been perfect providing clear water and an influx of bait schools.

Gulf Kingfish Action!!
Gulf Kingfish Action!!

The Kings are here and there’s tons of em!! Half day charters can expect solid kingfish action with light tackle and live bait. The fish have been between 12-20 lbs mostly with a few smokers caught last week in the 40lb + range.
The 3/4 day charters have also been enjoying tons of action, typically we fish Kings in the morning then switch to Grouper when the sun gets overhead. We’ve also been getting tons of Gag Grouper, which are out of season right now but still provide a good fight.
The full day trips are absolutely wrecking the big Amberjack on the wrecks and Springs well offshore. These charters are great because we can fish Amberjack early then switch to Grouper, Snapper and Kings for the rest of the day.
Whichever trip you choose, it’s a great time to be fishing in the Gulf right now!!!!
