The water temps are hovering around 60 degrees as of right now. This doesn’t shut down the fishing but it certainly changes our approach. On our half day charters, we are targeting nearshore species, such as Flounder, Snapper, Trout, etc… On the 3/4 day charters we are doing really well with the Hog Snapper, Manrove Snapper and Red Grouper while the Full Day offers the latter plus the ever abusive Amberjack. We are looking forward to a great Spring Break season starting in March and are already booking up fast, so stop wishing and let’s go fishing!
Deep Sea Fishing Report:
Lately the winds have been calm , the weather warm and the fishing really, really good. Red Grouper are now open along with Amberjack. Also the Hog Snapper fishing continues to be red hot. Mango Snapper have moved into shallower water making them more prominent on the half day trips than usual. Overall it’s as good as it gets for January in Clearwater FL.
Gag Grouper season in the Gulf Of Mexico ended on Dec 3rd for the Clearwater FL area. Thankfully we got good weather and ran a trip on the 2nd. With the forecasted cold front and heavy winds starting on the 3rd, the Grouper bite was on fire! Our 4 anglers caught a full limit of Gag Grouper ranging from 10-16 lbs each. They also managed some nice Scampo Grouper and Hog Snapper.
Red Grouper season is coming up soon as well as Amberjack, so plenty of fishing to look forward to during the winter months!!
Clearwater Charter Fishing Report
We are finally getting cooler weather here in Clearwater Florida! This means better fishing for Grouper and Snapper on the Deep Sea trips and more action on the nearshore trips.
At this time the Gag Grouper bite has been really good on our full day charters, mostly from 15-30 miles offshore. The key to producing lately has been big live baits, over ledges and natural reef areas. The Hog Snapper bite continues to be on fire! The 3/4 day charters are experiencing tons of action and several nice keepers on those trips.
Nearshore Fishing Report:
The nearshore fishing out of Clearwater beach has been superb. These are great charters for kids and new anglers as it is typically calmer water. We have been catching Flounder, Cobia, Sea bass and more.

The Grouper fishing out of Clearwater has been great lately. Our Fulld Day fishing charters have been getting limits of above average Gag Grouper with some keeper Reds mixed in as well. The end of Summer is a great time to head out deep sea fishing in Clearwater. Great fishing and typically calm seas!
As the weather gets hotter, the best fishing tends to be farther offshore. Keeper Red Grouper have been easiest to catch the farther out we go, also the Amberjack bite has been extremely good on the deeper offshore wrecks. I expect this pattern to stay though the end of the month. June 1st Red Snapper season opens so we’ll shift our attention to them for awhile. Nearshore the Tarpon have shown up off the Clearwater Beaches and getting hook ups means getting up early!
NOAA Fisheries announced the 2015 Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper Season will be from June 1st – July 15th. This is for Federal For-Hire Vessels (with a valid permit). FishEye Sportfishing carries such a permit so book your trip now as dates fill up quick!!
We run our Red Snapper Charter as an extended day, but put emphasis on getting our group a limit of big Snapper before targeting Grouper, Amberjack, tuna, etc…. Here is some FWC info on our Red Snapper fishery.
